1) Tell us something about yourself that your fans may not know.
A: I can do the splits.
2) When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
A: Does anyone else remember the talent search programme to form S Club Juniors really vividly? I was furious because I was too young to apply, and I desperately wanted to be in S Club. I think I always knew I wanted to sing and perform, although I did abandon the idea for a few years and got a degree in French and German.
Even when I was releasing Hard To Love I was thinking that music probably isn’t a viable career option for me. Now that I’m on my third single and getting songwriting cuts for other artists, it feels a lot more real. I mean, I still have a day job, so we’ll see.
3) Who are some artists who influenced your musical style growing up?
A: Paramore, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga. These are still huge influences for me, although add Carly Rae Jepsen, Rina Sawayama, Fickle Friends and The 1975.
4) What's your process like when creating a new track in the studio?
A: If it’s from scratch, I usually go in with a couple of concepts that I think could be fun. Maybe I feel like I’m missing something in my live set or I think “oh this idea could be cute to tie in with that other song I did”.
A few weeks ago I had a session with my friend Alex Rossiter, who also plays drums in my band. I went in thinking it would be nice to write something that feels a bit sexy, as I don't have anything like that in my set. We ended up writing about fancying someone so much you'd like to wear their skin as a dress - which I hasten to add is not something I've ever actually felt, but it's a very fun demo.
5) How has your single Hard To Love helped you grow your career and fanbase?
A: Honestly I didn't have a career or a fanbase before Hard To Love! Going viral on tiktok was terrifying but it was such a blessing as it's put me in front of important people and brought me some dedicated fans. Hard To Love is also a really reliable song when I perform it live as people really get behind it and sing along, which is my favourite thing.
6) What was the inspiration behind your latest single One More Night?
A: The main inspiration was the film My Best Friend's Wedding. I was having a really hard time writing about myself at the time - partly as I had a lot of feelings to process around a breakup. I put myself in the main character's shoes and wrote the song from her perspective, with a healthy dose of my own feelings too.
If anyone is reading this and hasn't seen the film, I'd highly recommend watching it. It's the perfect anti-romcom. And once you've watched it, you could listen to One More Night…
