Thoreau
1) Tell us something about yourself that your fans may not know.
A: I write, record, produce, and mix everything I put out.
2) How did you come up with your stage name Thoreau?
A: My parents actually named me Henry after the writer Henry David Thoreau, so it wasn’t really that much of a stretch to decide that’s what I wanted my stage name to be.
3) You recently released your song 'Dunno.' How did you come up with this track?
A: Mac Miller has been a huge inspiration especially since I started making more hip hop and his song “Dunno” was one of my favorites.
So I thought I’d pay tribute to one of the greats by covering/reworking it.
4) What made you want to make a Mac Miller tribute/remix song?
A: He’s honestly had such a huge impact on my sound and my taste in music in general. Right now I can’t really imagine another artist that I like and listen to enough to do a cover of one of their songs.
5) What was the first track you ever produced? How does it sound now compared to your new stuff?
A: Oh man, the first track I ever produced was kind of a train wreck, but I guess it still had some familiar elements to my production style now. Needless to say, the quality has come a long way since I started producing in 2012!
6) What inspired you to get into producing?
A: As soon as I realized I didn’t need a band or even a recording studio to make music, I knew I’d never want to do anything else. Having the ability to accomplish almost anything with a microphone and a computer is still so insane to me, and shout out to YouTube for teaching me almost everything I know!
7) We know you made a song with Darci not too long ago. How was it working with him?
A: Dude is insanely talented and honestly one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with. Our chemistry in the studio is so focused that we can bust out like five tracks during one session. I’d love to see some of the other stuff we did together get released and maybe it will down the road.
8) If you could describe a Thoreau track in 2 words, what would you say?
A: Real and raw.
9) Who is your biggest inspiration in the scene?
A: Drake deserves a mention just because he’s undeniably the king. On a more underground level, this guy Aries has been my favorite for a little bit. Dude produces everything himself and has such a unique sound and writing style, I just have so much respect for the guy.
10) What is one thing about the scene that bugs you?
A: Egos. Everybody has one (myself included) and I think they get in the way of forming relationships and what could be huge collaborations. I’m sure everyone says this early on, but when I have a little more clout to my name, I hope I’m as open to hearing people out as I am now.
